College Thursdays
In an effort to bolster Roosevelt's college-going culture, we are going to celebrate "College Thursdays" again this year. Learners are encouraged to represent their favorite college t-shirt each Thursday.
I will be announcing some fun facts and information about different colleges during morning announcements.
Why is creating a college-going culture so important?
A college-going culture helps all learners set and achieve high goals and generates other important values:
- Appreciation of academics
- Desire to succeed
- Drive to attend college and become a lifelong learner
When learners have school, parental and community support, college is seen as the norm: higher education is the expectation rather than the exception

Attendance Awareness Month
September is Attendance Awareness Month!
Attendance is essential to school success, but too often learners and parents do not realize how quickly absences — excused and unexcused — can add up to academic trouble. Chronic absence — missing 10 percent of the school year, or just 2-3 days every month—can translate into third-graders unable to master reading, sixth-graders failing courses and ninth-graders dropping out of high school. Low-income learners, who most depend on school for opportunities to learn, are especially harmed when they miss too much instruction.
The good news is this is a problem we can fix when schools and communities work with learners and families, starting in the early grades to identify barriers to getting to school, help learners overcome these barriers and cultivate a culture of attendance that encourages showing up every day even when it isn’t easy. This starts by helping everyone in the community recognize they have a stake and a role.
